Why is PTO important and how can using your PTO be beneficial? Paid time off (PTO) is not solely reserved for sick days or vacations. This month’s mentor article will focus on ways to utilize PTO that are purposeful, planful, mindful and intentional. In doing so, we can show up better for ourselves as well as others while also benefiting our social, emotional, physical and mental wellness.
Before considering using PTO it’s important to be informed about your agency’s policy regarding the use of PTO. Every agency has different policies that will come into play when an employee utilizes PTO. Some companies may offer a payout for unused PTO, but this is not always the case. If your company has a “use it or lose it” policy, you’ll lose your PTO if you don’t use it before the end of the year. Many companies require you to use your PTO by the end of the year, or it may be lost. Check your company’s policy on PTO rollover or payout to understand if and how much unused time can be carried over. Below are a few things to keep in mind as we continue to explore PTO.
Remember to prevent forfeiture.
- Knowing your company’s policy regarding unused PTO can help ensure that you don’t lose out on PTO and make mindful choices regarding use of valuable time.
You deserve to enjoy time off!
- Get out of the mentality that time off is reserved for necessities. Plan a day off just because you can and you should. Do something that brings you joy.
PTO helps to avoid burnout.
- Regular breaks and time away from work allows you to mentally detach from work and help prevent burnout. Employers, encourage employees to take shorter, more frequent breaks each year.
PTO is also for personal needs.
- Taking PTO provides an opportunity to spend quality time with loved ones, nurture personal relationships and prioritize your own needs.
PTO creates/encourages work-life balance.
- The 40-hour work week has been the standard for many decades in many countries, but its relevance and benefits have been questioned in recent years. Avoid overworking and not utilizing PTO in a way that promotes a work-life balance.
PTO boosts productivity.
- Taking PTO can enhance productivity by recharging the brain, improving focus and problem-solving abilities.
PTO helps to reduce stress.
- Taking time off for rest and relaxation can help reduce stress hormones and strengthen the immune system, making you less susceptible to illness.
PTO has health benefits.
- Chronic stress and overwork can have negative impacts on physical health, including increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and weakened immune function.
PTO has creativity benefits.
- Time away from work can allow us to return with fresh ideas, perspectives and a renewed mind.
PTO Supports overall mental health.
- Taking a break from your routine and engaging in enjoyable activities can boost dopamine levels, the “feel-good” hormone, making you happier and more relaxed. Research has shown that vacations can improve mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
PTO is a benefit that employees should love to take advantage of and be encouraged to do so. You deserve to take your time! HR managers, supervisors and business owners can model a top down approach by communicating the advantages of taking PTO to employees and encouraging this in an effort to promote work life balance.
