It is almost that time of the year again- Spring Cleaning! This is the time to figure out how you want to refresh your space- after the long winter months; and determine what needs to be kept and what you must part ways with. While this might seem easy for others, to some, this can be hard, but regardless of which one you are, here are 10 practical steps you can take to help declutter your space effectively.
Start Small
The process of decluttering can be overwhelming at times due to the number of things that need to be done, while it might seem effective to clean out the whole space at once, at the same time, taking it a piece at a time works better. Start with cleaning a smaller space like the closet or car, this helps build momentum and reduces the overwhelming feeling that comes with tackling the whole space.
Assess your need
Go through your things and identify items that you no longer need and sort out the ones that you need- leave the ones that you are still contemplating on the side. Use the “one-in, one-out” rule that allows you to remove one item whenever you bring something new in.
Create dedicated spaces for essentials
Create specific places for everyday objects such as bags, mail, phones and keys. Put things back with purpose. This decreases the visual clutter that can build up on counter tops and tables, making your home feel immediately more tidy.
Tackle Digital Clutter
Sometimes we hold onto that one photo or file that is no longer needed. Sort through your documents and digital files, put them into folders for easy accessibility, delete duplicates and unsubscribe from unwanted emails. This will help improve focus and reduce stress.
Maintain the decluttered space
It doesn’t stop after that one time; it is a continuous process! Regularly review the things you have and get rid of what you don’t need.
Decluttering can be stressful. Depending on how big the space is, assigning people what to do, based on their ability and schedule can help the process move faster instead of just leaving it to one person.
Tackle sentimental items last
Sentimental items can be hard to let go of, so save them for end of the process. Once you have built your decluttering muscles, you will feel more comfortable making those decisions.
Establish a donation box
As you have started removing clutter, make sure to keep a donation box at hand. Add items you no longer need or use, (make sure they are still usable for the next owner) this habit makes decluttering a continuous process rather than a one-time thing.
Embrace multi-functional storage
Once you have decluttered, use furniture that doubles as storage such as ottomans. This helps to keep the space organized while maintaining style.
Celebrate your progress
Decluttering can be difficult, so celebrate the wins along the way. After completing a major decluttering project, reward yourself with something special and appreciate the feeling of calmness and order that your newly decluttered space provides.
Clutter is an inevitable part of life, but with effective decluttering strategies and a mindful approach, you can transform your space into a sanctuary of calm and order. By following these practical steps, celebrating your progress, and maintaining consistency, you can not only enhance your environment but also boost your overall well-being.
