Purposeful Parenting Month is upon us and the long summer gives us lots of time to grow and develop the parent/child relationship. Purposeful Parenting Month is a time to focus on intentional parenting, setting goals for children’s development, and fostering positive relationships through open communication and understanding. Summer is a great opportunity to find the balance between structure and spontaneity that is purposeful and fun at the same time.
Purposeful parenting is about actively engaging with your children, with long-term goals in mind as to how they can become the best versions of themselves. It’s about connecting, listening, discussing, and nurturing.
Key Aspects of Purposeful Parenting:
- Intentionality
- Nurturing
- Empathy and Understanding
- Building Strong Relationships
- Focus on Long-Term Goals
- Progressive Approach
- Positive and Playful
- Accountability
Strategies for a Successful Summer Break: Balancing Structure and Spontaneity with Purposeful Parenting
- Plan intentional activities: Take time to plan activities and outings that promote quality time together.
- Focus on buildings habits: Provide structure, routine and take to foster positive behaviors. This can include limits with screen time and social emotional learning.
- Make time for rest: Summer can be a busy time and its easy to have a jam packed schedule and forget about the importance of down time. Encourage rest and time for self care to help avoid burnout and feelings of exhaustion.
- Promote independent play and exploration: Encourage time for arts and crafts, reading and time outdoors to build your child’s sense of autonomy and lessen their dependence on parents for entertainments.
- Turn “no” into “yes, then”, “yes, if” and “yes, when”: For example, you can go outside when you put your toys away.
Purposeful Parenting Month is a time to focus on connection and parenting with intention. While it’s easy to prioritize our children it’s also important to focus on your own needs and self-care.
